Pereira vs Rountree

At a closing underdog of +400, Khalil Rountree was expected by many to quickly fall victim to the champion, Alex Pereira, with the Majority of fans expecting a finish in the first two rounds. Rountree showcased remarkable composure and skill, combining relentless pressure with sharp striking. His left hook, a weapon few expected to trouble the champion, even dropped Pereira to the canvas in the first round, marking a career highlight for the challenger. It was a version of Rountree no one had seen before—focused, dynamic, and unrelenting.

The momentum began to shift through the third, where the champion switched almost into a different gear, refusing to keep moving backwards and starting to land his signature left hook and low kicks, before the buzzer. The momentum from Pereira climaxed with a powerful jab busting open Rountree’s nose, as a shark smelling blood in the water, the champion marched forward and launched an onslaught of knees, elbows and punches. The onslaught was too much for the valiant challenger, and referee Marc Goddard had no choice but to stop the fight after four one-sided minutes. Pereira’s comeback victory marked another successful defense of his title—his third in an extraordinary year.

Both fighters were awarded $50,000 Fight of the Night bonuses, with Dana White labeling the bout a “Fight of the Year contender.” The UFC president was also effusive in his praise for Rountree, saying, “You can’t buy heart,” acknowledging the incredible resilience and determination shown by the underdog.

With this victory, Alex Pereira cemented his status as Fighter of the Year, showcasing the grit, skill, and championship mentality that have made him one of the most feared fighters in MMA. For Rountree, the fight may not have ended with a belt, but his courage and improvement have won him the admiration of fans and fighters alike.
